Opening a discussion on HIV, HepC and STIs

As part of the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR competition interview, I was asked my thoughts on barebacking. I stronlgly believe that the judges were not looking for a specific ansswer but rather if I have realy taken the time to decide what I do believe and practice in my life.

Over 27 years ago my former partner died of HIV related illness. For the past 26 years I have been very active in the HIV, AIDS, & Hep C movement in my local communities.

In the 90’s I co- founded the AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area .

In 2000 I moved to Sudbury was on and later became president of the board of directors for ACCESS AIDS Network.

During my last 6 years of HIV related volunteering I also became the Northern Ontario Non Designated Representative to the Board of Directors of the Ontario AIDS Network .

The OAN is an Umbrella organization, which supports all the AIDS Services Organizations in the province or Ontario.  One of the things that has impressed me about the OAN is their research in to the real topics as to why some  bareback. This is not a black and white question as they have found out.  Some of the research results showed our strongh human desire to seed and be seeded, how aging plays a big part in our decisions.

Myself I have been a fortunate one. Through my practices of safer sex and oral protocol managed to avoid having to deal with HIV on a daily basis hence why the non-designated position on the board of the OAN.

In 2010, I retired from my volunteer work where I met many of my personal heroes. I’m now devoting my 40 hours a month of “free time” to my Leather family and my responsibilities as Eastern Canada LeatherSir 2011.

Where I live in Sudbury I have found some of my long-term leather play partners, boys and slaves on a site called squirt.org. I have also found the general knowledge about HIV of the boys on that site to be dropping over the past few years, with their profiles stating “Safer Sex always” while being flagged as someone who wants to bareback. As a covered Master and a former HIV activist I feel compelled to at least help future boys (and Sirs) make informed decisions about HIV.

As many of you know I am a fan of some of Jack Rinella’s writings and have been following his blog.  Here is his latest and possibly his only blog on HIV. I know not all of you will agree with him, but hopefully he will help to you think and make a informed decisions about what is right for you.

Poz Friendly

OK, I’m not a medical doctor. I hope you know that. Many of you also know that I am HIV positive and have been for some 17 years. My viral load is undetectable and my T-cell counts are in the normal range for a healthy person.

I seldom write about HIV, except that I often remind people to play safely, get tested for STDs often, and have a doctor they can talk to about their sexual lives. For your information, “poz friendly” means that you are willing to have sex with a person who is infected with HIV.

This column was prompted by the frequent comments I get while seeking another slave. Simply put, in spite of the wealth of good information and online access to it, there is a lot of bad information about HIV transmission. Fear of infection is a good thing, paranoia isn’t. So let me lay out the facts as I understand them.

You can take the facts I write as that, search for information to prove or disprove what I write, or print out this essay and discuss it with your doctor. In any case, please make an informed decision about HIV. Living in ignorance, in doubt, or in denial is no way to maintain a healthy life.

For those of you who want to “bareback,” i.e., fuck without a condom, I will remind you that you are playing a dangerous game. Even if there are drugs to control HIV, they are not perfect. The disease will still play havoc on your body, the side-affects of the drugs will make you miserable, and the medication alone, not to mention doctor and testing costs, will run about $21,000 a year.

The argument that you can bareback with a person who is not infected is fallacious since no one, except a person who is truly celibate or truly monogamous, can ever guarantee that they are actually HIV negative. The following safety guide does not apply to couples who are monogamous and HIV free. Remember though that to be sure you are HIV negative takes two tests separated by some six months, since one test may not detect a recent infection.

HIV transmission is, thankfully, a rather difficult task. You are much more likely to get syphilis, gonorrhea, or hepatitis A, B, or C more easily than HIV. You are also liable to get Herpes or the flu. Nothing is without risk. Nothing is “safe.” All we can do is to make things “safer.” That said, take reasonable and necessary precautions and then have fun. Unfortunately none of us is getting out of this world alive. Precaution is advised, paranoia is not.

HIV is a virus that is transmitted through the bodily fluids of blood, semen, and breast milk.
Pre-cum presents at most a tiny theoretical risk, not a practical one. Neither saliva nor sweat contain the virus and therefore are safe. HIV can live outside the body for a number of hours. It is easily cleaned with antiseptic soap and running water. You can disinfect with Clorox in a one-to-ten ratio.

Skin is an effective barrier against HIV transmission. Therefore ejaculating semen on to healthy bare skin is safe. The only caveat is that the skin is not broken. HIV can enter the body through a cut, abrasion, or wound. For that reason, when fisting is done, use surgical gloves to insure that there is no transmission through minute cuts in the fingers.

Since HIV is very sensitive to air and light, the risk of transmission through pre-cum is low. Lube will also reduce the risk of transmission through pre-cum. That said, never insert a penis into a vagina or anus without the protection of a condom.

HIV is not transmitted orally. It is safe to suck a penis without protection and to ejaculate into your partner’s mouth. There is one important caveat: the recipient’s mouth needs be healthy. If there are cuts on the tongue or inside the mouth, or if the gums are bleeding, there is a risk of HIV infection. For that reason it is not advisable to have oral sex on the day you have dental work done nor to brush or floss your teeth before having oral sex.

There are no proven incidents the oral transmission of HIV. Believe me, if HIV were transmitted orally, there would be a much higher rate of HIV infection among gay men.

To quote the San Francisco City Clinic website: “HIV is rarely spread through oral sex and it is not spread from an HIV-infected blow-job giver to an uninfected partner. There are case reports-descriptions by doctors in scientific magazines-that suggest HIV can be spread by swallowing the cum of someone with HIV-infection during oral sex. Our experience in San Francisco supports that such spread of HIV is a very rare event. While HIV can be found in the saliva, the saliva also has special factors that block the growth of the virus. Other STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and herpes can be much more easily spread through oral sex.”

And lastly, here’s some information about intercourse. It applies to both vaginal and anal sex.

From Go Ask Alice at http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1849.html

“Several studies have been done on relationships similar to yours, where one partner is HIV-positive and the other negative (a.k.a., mixed status or HIV-discordant couples). A study published in 1994 in The New England Journal of Medicine looked at 256 heterosexual mixed status couples. Of the 124 couples that consistently used condoms, none of the HIV-negative partners were infected. Among the 121 couples that did not consistently use condoms, 12 (about 10 percent) of the HIV-negative partners became infected. Additional studies found similar results.

“Consistent and correct condom usage is the key to lowering the risk of HIV transmission in mixed status couples, whatever their sexuality. Condoms are highly effective in preventing the transmission of HIV, but sometimes fail. Those failures are most often due to incorrect usage or user error. To reduce condom failure:

. Use water-based lubes, never oil-based ones such as petroleum jelly, cooking oil or shortening, or hand-lotion – they can weaken the latex.
. Keep condoms away from heat or direct sunlight.
. Check the expiration dates printed on the package. Condoms that are too old or expired, or have packaging that appears to be weathered or deflated, need to be thrown away.
. Carefully open the condom with your fingers, trying not to tear it with your fingernails (or teeth).

And from the San Francisco City Clinic:

“There is no evidence that wearing two condoms is more effective than wearing one, and in fact, there is some hearsay evidence that the friction of the two condoms rubbing together can cause them to break, making you more susceptible to HIV and other STDs.

“As far as viral load, research has shown that the viral load in blood correlates to levels in semen and vaginal secretions. However, that correlation is only about 70% and it has not been proven what level of virus is needed for transmission. Even an undetectable viral load doesn’t mean an infected person will not transmit HIV to an uninfected partner. Therefore it is very important that you continue to use condoms no matter your partner’s viral load. In addition, a person’s viral load can change, so that viral load a month ago may not be the viral load the day you had sex.

“In many cities, like San Francisco, after having a known exposure to HIV — being topped by an HIV+ guy and then the condom breaks — a guy can start PEP, or post-exposure prevention, which is a combination of anti-HIV medications. The important thing is that these medications have to be started as soon as possible, ideally within four hours, but it may be OK within 72 hours after exposure. Most emergency rooms and doctors know about PEP and can prescribe it. It’s not one dose — you have to take meds for a month and they can make you ill — so I don’t recommend it except in real emergencies. To learn more about PEP, go to the UCSF Medical Center website at http://www.ucsfhealth.org/conditions/hiv/index.html and type PEP in the Search box.”

After all is said and done, you have to decide what you are going to do and who you are going to do it with. I ask two things. First get the facts and make an informed decision. Secondly, no matter what you decide be honest in your decision. If you decide not to be poz friendly, at least be friendly to people who are positive.

Flash Back to 1993 Central Canada Drummer Competition

I recently received a email from Ladywolf a fellow Fet Life member who remembered me from a event she went to in 1993. She sent me this one from the Central Canada Drummer competition in 1993. As she is able to find more I will post them.

Eating Out Protocols

I sometimes do posts on particular Topics in the Masters and slave groups in FetLife.

Here are my thoughts
Do you order food for your slave? Do they order for you? Why?
I tend to go for Chinese buffet. When entering the restaurant if it’s a familiar restaurant my slave will assist me with my coat and place it in a safe place.

the boy or slave will then automatically go and prepare a won ton soup to my specifications. Upon returning he will be told my variation for the meal such as high protein low carb.

When not familiar with the restaurant I will give orders as for what I want to end up with such as non spicy high protein, med carb. Knowing the restaurant they will order for me.
I do not micro manage my slaves while at the same time getting what I want.

Do you ask for input or simply order whatever you want them to eat?
Once I’m served he will be told to go serve himself. This is not a cart blanche as one of his primary orders is to take care of my property and eat resonably.

Do you have standing orders about how many drinks they can have, their interactions with waitstaff, etc?
I will deferentiate re alcoholic and non. Yes I may dictate alcoholic intake as only I know what my plans are that evening for my  boy or slave. I will also monitor their fluid intake as I may use this knowledge later during play.

The standing orders are to interact with wait staff, to secure drink fill ups if they are not automaticcly done by staff. Wait staff time at the table is to be minimized as to not interupt our discussions by pilling used dishes in a easily acessible corner of the table.

Do you make them wait to eat until you have started?
I do not make them, however they do wait till I or my fellow Dom has started.

My roots were showing at ECLSb 2011

Before we begin let me make this perfectly clear.  I don’t color my hair.

I remember as a kid going horseback riding, taking lessons at the ridding local riding stable in North Bay, being shown how to take care of horses by a big bearish man who owned the stables. The first gay porn magazine I bought was a series of cowboy pictures based on a 1970s porn movie. The image of a butch furry guy pined down and fucked is still burnt deeply into my psyche to this day.

One year for my birthday as a surprise my Partner Rocco was able to sneak leather into the house and made me a pair of tooling leather horse ridding chaps. Like almost all un-dyed tooling leather they were a pinkish tan brown in color and stiff as hell. With the help of a litre or two of Lexol leather conditioner, they softened right up and were flexible enough so that I could squat right down to the ground. With many hours of ridding and playing in the sun they gradually turned a dark brown.

As a gay man in my late twenties I once again took up horseback riding and training. I experimented with saddle bondage, pegging and hog-tying. Rocco and I built a dual play cabin the in woods my side looking like a tack room with a single sleeping cot and kerosene lanterns to light the room. Outside on the porch the railings which were strategically placed and de-slivered for bondage, looked like a ranch house, with rain barrels and a pump for the outdoor shower.

In 1992, LYNX (Leathermen Yearning for Northern Xcitement) was founded. The group rules were simple to get Chuck (OK Rocco as well) laid. Later the word Chuck was removed. That fall our first run based on our 90 acres of land just outside North bay attracted leather men from as far away as Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Toronto and resulted in a 2-page spread in The Leather Journal.

At runs like the Rochester Rams  a Spearhead runs, I was given the nick name Cowboy Chuck. Some found my moose horn bondage a bit intriguing but quickly found out that it was the simplest way to secure a boy to a cabin. Walking by my camp site at night passes by never knew who they would see being fucked while bound over some bales of hay to one of my saddles beside my camp fire.

In later years after moving to Sudbury I had a boy who was into black leather. He talked me into going shopping for a vest and chaps at Doc’s Leathers. Trying on several pairs until all of a sudden there was a lump and a wet spot in the front of his jeans, and a big shit ass grin on his face. Like the sorting hat in Harry Potter the previously owned chaps had found the right Sir for the next journey. I also tried on a very wide thick harness, which went very well with my build. That night I had on of the hottest times I have ever had breaking in my new black leathers with boy Jim.

I have never been one to follow the crowd and to this day I still look at things in a different way, but from day one I have been clear as to who I am and what I believe in. In preparation for the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR competition I asked my former slave, now Sir, Dan and boy iain to advise me on what I should consider wearing. Both of them knowing me well suggested that at some point during the competition that I show the judges my true leather journey. For the interview portion to the surprise and possibly horrified of some of the judges, I showed up in my old trusty brown corduroy hat, my scratched up bush ridding chaps, my old faithful heavily worn (and well licked) boots with spurs, my brown vest and a LYNX T shirt. It was suggested by one of the judges that they wanted to just jump over the table and hand me some saddle soap. I explained that I like rugged well-worn leathers for my play.

To this day I prefer to play out doors, where you get dirty, muddy, and animalistic. Since boy Jim’s first black leather fuck, I have continued to grow expand learn, and ad to my BDSM DS life both in black and brown leather.

My advice to all who are thinking of entering Eastern Canada LeatherSIR is simple. Remember who you are and where you came from your history and what you value, don’t be afraid to show your roots, and get ready for the ride of your lives.

Getting over what squicks you out

I regularly follow threads on Fetlife, and in particular, a discussion that is used as listener feedback for The Dark Side podcast

Here is my contribution and a link to the discussion on Fet Life so you may add your own thoughts:

What Squicks me and why?
What squicked me is a better question.  Fire play, cutting, branding, and diaper and age play.

Did it always squick you?
Up till when I saw demos of it with bottom who really get into it

What is the result of having that squick?
I did not seek out learning opportunities to learn how to do it myself.

Do you like or dislike the fact that it squicks you?
Well us control Doms don’t like being controlled even by our own Squicks.

Have you ever tried to do something to change the situation?
As a Dom the way I got over my squicks the same way I help my subs get de squicked. Being a “feedback slut” in this case can really work to my advantage.

When I’m in a gentle mood I have my sub that is squicked watch me play with a sub that is into that particular play. I have found that seeing a big wide smile the demo bottoms face helps them know how good it could feel. Most then ask to try it.

When I’m in an evil mood I do mind fucks. One of my slaves was really squicked out by needle play. The day before I casually mentioned I needed to go shopping for some alcohol, and some make up pads. We went shopping and had him hold the supplies while I continued to shop. Later that night I took the supplies and headed down to one of my playrooms and came up with a big smile and we went to bed. The next day I talked about a hot needle play scene that I once had over breakfast. That afternoon it was time to play. Once strapped down to my bondage table, I pulled out the alcohol, my piercing kit, which I made sure, he saw in the mirror and then blind folded him. I carefully put alcohol all over a make up pad and waved it by his nose so he would know it was alcohol, and then proceed to wash his belly, and cock. I then took out my sounds and proceeded to sound him.

From our post scene discussion …what was going through his mind, from the shopping.. to the breakfast.. to being bound on my table ..was that he was convinced he would be used for needle play. When his cock was sanitized he thought holly fuck he’s starting there. Then he remembered thinking if Master thinks I’m ready I will trust his judgment. He found the sounding rather dull but now reports that since he has mentally gone through the fear of needle play….. he now wants to try it. One more soft limit off his list.

My second post to Fetlife

Well I guess I’m not very good at following directions. Good Dom…. good Dom.

Here are the whys:

Fire play: My risk management brain did overtime.

Cutting: I tend to cut myself at work on sharp metal not particularly pleasant.

Branding: I once branded myself accidentally while doing hot metal work the smell of burning flesh in particular mine was originally the issue.

Needle play: As a kid I hated going to the doctors and having my mum almost in hysterics saying don’t worry it wont hurt too much.

Diaper and age play: Being a bio parent it almost felt like a betrayal of the relationship I had with my kids

Full body weight stomping: Afraid to break bones

Well there goes my virginity

 Well there goes my virginity

As many of you know I tend to be a very private person. Three years ago I was asked by my then slave Dan to enter Eastern Canada LeatherSIR and Leatherboy competition with him. At that time I concluded that the timing was not right for me due being the patriarch of a very large leather family and with additional load of long term  volunteer commitments totaling up to 40 hours a month.

Last fall my terms on the board of directors of the Ontario AIDS Network and ACCESS AIDS Network came to a close after 9 years of work.

With 40 hours more capacity  per month I have decided to take at least 30 more hours for myself which will include working out more, and more play with my leather family, more time spent with my  partner and bio family. That will leave 10 hours a month for new adventures.

Well here goes the new adventure. Last Friday my boy iain and I entered the Eastern Canada LeatherSIR and Leatherboy competition and won. One of the concerns for me as Eastern Canada LeatherSIR for 2011 is the lack of competitors.

Here’s were the virginity part comes in.  I  am not social media person, I don’t use twitter or face book to name a few, nor am I a public person. All that said I now see value in sharing my leather life and journey with you and now a bit more easily with  my wonderful leather family.

One of the goals of this blog is to show what is involved in being a title holder so that more will come forward and volunteer to be ambassadors for our players community.

I also hope that this blog will also asist others to be more public and open so that we can all benifit from their knowlege and life experience.
